CIVE1180 – Transport Engineering 1CIVE1180 – Transport Engineering 1 Assessment Task 1 – Geometric Design of Roads
Background Interest has been expressed in building a new road in a greenfield site. According to the data collected from various traffic count stations nearby, the road is expected to have two lanes and two directions of travel and can be classified Class 2 rural as per Australoid functional classification of roads. Each group will be responsible for the geometric design of all components of the road between points C and D on the map (Figure 1) in accordance with Austroads Guide to Road Design: Part 3. Each group is expected to produce and submit a technical report containing at least the following information:1. general description of the site and its topographic characterization;2. general design considerations (i.e. see Week#1 slides 35-41);3. identification of 3 tentative routes on the map and screening of alternatives;4. horizontal alignment (this includes straights, circular and transition curves design and their plan-view representation on the map);5. vertical alignment (this includes longitudinal profile of terrain, longitudinal profile of the road, evaluation of earthworks, vertical curves design);6. application of the operating speed model on the design route per one direction of travel;7. comments about the coordination between horizontal and vertical alignments;8. technical drawing of 3 cross-sections (on a straight, circular curve and transition curve, respectively);9. conclusions and recommendations to further progress in the design stage.
There is no specific format to prepare the final report. Each group is expected to produce a unique road project alignment; copying the road alignment from other groups will be penalized. Note 1: AutoCAD must be used for all technical drawings.Note 2: Groups can also choose to select their own topographic map from here http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?url=http%3A%2F%2Fservices.arcgisonline.com%2Farcgis%2Frest%2Fservices%2FWorld_Topo_Map%2FMapServer&source=sd as long as the overall length is at least 6 km and flat terrain is avoided.
