Subject:Psychology
Topic:Lab Report A
This assignment consists of a 750 word introduction and reference list, with reference list not included in the word count. The current study looks at the relationship between cognitive style and prejudice. This is an area that has been relatively underexplored, though researchers have found a significant relationship between measures such as Personal Need for Structure (PNS) and prejudice (Schaller, Boyd, Yohannes & O’Brien, 1995). Nonetheless, there has been little research looking at how this relationship may be influenced by variables such as Causal Uncertainty (CU). Those high in PNS seek order and structure in the world. In turn those high in CU doubt their ability to discern the causes of social events. It is possible that both of these variables may influence an individual’s level of racism. PNS, measuring a desire for simple structure, has been associated with seeing out-group members in simple stereotypical ways (Schaller, et al., 1995). It may also be the case that CU will be related with a person’s ability to discern broad social factors that influence the behaviour of out-group members. The personal need for structure scale (Neuberg & Newsom, 1993) assesses the degree to which an individual desires to simplify and order their environment. It has been found to consist of two subscales “desire for structure” and “response to lack of structure”. The causal uncertainty scale (Weary & Edwards, 1994) measures perceived ability to determine the causes of social events. Modern racism scale (McConahay, 1986) seeks to measure newer more subtle forms of racism that in most modern societies have largely replaced older, more blatant, forms of prejudice. Must have a minimum of 6 references

Laboratory Report 1A
Due: In your tutorial class in Week 8
Weighting: 10% of your final mark
Assessment
This assignment consists of a 750 word introduction and reference list, with reference list not included in the word count. It will be based on the data collection exercise completed in your tutorial. This assignment, Lab Report 1A, is due in Week 8.
Lab Report 1B is due in Week 11, and will consist of a complete report (abstract, revised introduction, methods, results, discussion, and reference list) that will incorporate feedback provided from Lab Report 1A.
In writing your introduction and reference list, you should follow the report writing guidelines outlined in Findlay.
Background

Note: Remember, always read with purpose. For each required reading you should aim to answer the following questions (where applicable):
What have previous studies found?
What was the main purpose of this study? How is this study different from previous research?
What conclusions were drawn by the authors?
Why are these findings important? What do they really mean?
What are the limitations of this research?
What should future research include?
