  1. Note: To complete the following assignment you are advised to study lecture notes (powerpoint slides). You are also required to watch a number of videos as noted in section B. In addition to the notes and videos you may find the following books very useful:
  • The Structural Basis of Architecture; N. Sandaker, A.P. Eggen, M. R. Cruvellier [721 SAN]
  • Building Structures Illustrated; D. K. Ching, B. S. Onouye, D Zuberbuhler [624.1771]
  • Understanding Structures; Fuller & Moore [690.21]

Also the video that is specifically relevant to a lecture is also noted on the last page. All the lecture notes and videos are accessible on Webcourses.

Submission Deadline is 1st September 2017.  Only hardcopies will be accepted. Please drop your solutions into my locker which is outside the school office for the School of Civil & Structural Engineering, (directly above the King Street entrance).

Section 1 [80%]: Provide a full solution to the following questions

Question 1.

Discuss the structural behaviour of the following Tension structures:

  1. Double-cable systems
  2. Cable-stayed and mast system
  3. Inclined Hangers
  4. Bicycle wheel structures
  5. Cables and suspension structures

Your discussion should include the following:

  • A description of the typical mechanisms of force transfer that are utilized to resist applied forces – both vertical and horizontal- within the structure
  • The type of reactions that are required at support locations to maintain equilibrium.
  • Load path diagrams that show how vertical and horizontal forces are transferred through the structure to the ground together with a written description.
  • The influence, if any that geometry or material properties have on the structural behavior should be described
  • Appropriate applications for the type of structure should be specified and at least one case study should be used to support your answer.

                                                                                                                                                  [20 Marks]

Question 2.

Discuss the structural behaviour of  the following Compression structures:

  1. An arch constructed with modern materials, eg steel, reinforced concrete, glulam timber
  2. Masonry or mass concrete dome
  3. Synclastic Shell
  4. Anticlastic Shell

Question 4.

Discuss the structural behaviour of any two of the following Truss structures:

  1. 3-dimensional truss structure
  2. Space frame
  3. Geodesic dome

Your discussion should include the following:

  • A description of the typical mechanisms of force transfer that are utilized to resist applied forces – both vertical and horizontal- within the structure
