Description
Leadership and Change module

Group Project [Prasentation]

Case Study Topic – Identify a significant change issue facing your chosen organisation, undertake a detailed analysis of the key change management and leadership issues and identify the wider implications of the case study.

In this activity you are required to analyse a case study or organisation change you are familiar with but not one you have covered on one of your other tasks on this module. As a team you can choose which organisation but note that everyone will be expected to participate fully in the work so there may be a disadvantage in selecting one which is very familiar to just one of you.

Practical issues

• don’t generally need to describe models and theories – just apply them

• 15-20 minutes. followed by questions, 30 minutes in total

• all to speak, or if not all, the member who doesn’t present would need to answer questions

• don’t need to refer to all the models/theories from the module, but good to show links between theories/ models

• assumption of powerpoint, but alternatives allowed

• paper copies for RB and J O’D required on the day

• electronic copy to RB on the day, will upload to Blackboard

• if someone is sick, they need to inform group members and tutors beforehand.

• academic piece of work, re. standard of citations and reference list.

What’s this module about?

This module explores the theory and practice of leadership and change in a variety of organisational contexts. Students will develop the critical, theoretical and practical skills to develop effective leadership and change strategies. Students will also be reflecting on their own leadership journey and concepts of personal transition.

How will this module deliver the relevant industry sector skills and competencies?

The module will cover leadership and change management skills and competences across a range of different industries and types of organisation. It will refer to the recent moves towards professionalisation of change management.

What is the current research context that this module applies?
Leadership and change are intensively researched areas of management activity. Journals that the module will draw upon include Leadership Quarterly, Leadership, Journal of Organizational Change Management and the Journal of Change Management. The research specialisms of the module team include change management and benefits management, organisational resilience and the leadership of third sector organisations.

How is internationalisation delivered and applied within the module?
The module will draw upon a wide range of case studies from different parts of the world. It will explore the role of national cultures on leadership and change in multinational organisations.

How does this module embed Principles of Responsible Management Education?
The ethical aspects of leadership in an organisational context will be explored and related to different leadership styles and theories. Decisions about ethics, sustainability and social responsibility involve change at both individual and organisational levels.

How will this module be delivered?

The module will be delivered through 12 workshops over 3 weeks (with an additional final session that is delayed to fit with the development of your portfolio after the block of taught sessions). The teaching and learning strategies adopted will encourage you to develop a critical and reflective approach to the course content and learning outcomes. To achieve this, a variety of teaching and learning methods will be used:

 Integrated discussions and case study workshops to encourage a student centred learning approach facilitating the application of theory to practice, and evaluation of the effectiveness of the models and concepts.

 A combination of self-directed individual, small group and whole group activities will offer a varied learning experience. This will allow students to develop reflexive skills considering how to make the most of their own knowledge, skills and attitudes to improve their leadership and change capabilities in different organisational contexts.

 The portfolio method of assessment supports action and reflective learning and is well suited to the integrated and experiential approach to learning to be adopted on the MBA.

How will this module be assessed?

This module is assessed entirely through the production of a portfolio. You will be required to produce two pieces of written work in the portfolio, of approximately 3,500 words in total. You will also develop and deliver a group presentation and undertake a review of your work.

The tasks you are expected to complete are explained in greater detail later in this module guide.

Turnitin

Your individual assessment excluding slides must be submitted through a system known as Turnitin. The Turnitin system will produce a report identifying any similarities between the work and existing literature or other sources and can be used to help students avoid plagiarism and assist with referencing.

Your seminar tutor will give you guidance on how to submit work through the system and how to act upon the report produced. Please note that any Turnitin submissions will be in addition to the actual online assignment submission.

How will module materials be made available to me?

Learning materials will be provided to you before the start of the module and during the delivery, dependent upon which is more appropriate to develop your skills and facilitate a student centred approach.

Marks will be released through Blackboard’s Grade Centre.

How will student feedback be obtained on this module and how will this be used?

The University requires student feedback to be obtained and evaluated for every module through our formal quality assurance processes. The method used is a questionnaire issued towards the end of the module. The results of this are analysed and used in reviewing the module for next year. The module team will reflect on the delivery of the module taking into account informal feedback from yourselves and will also include observations made by studentrepresentatives through course reviews. The module team will also conduct a formal review once delivery is completed. This again takes student observations and feedback into account, but this time also includes the analysis gained from the formal questionnaires mentioned previously, student results, observations of the course leader, and feedback from the external examiner and others involved in moderation.

Do remember that your views and comments are important to us. Please tell us how you feel things are going, and offer suggestions for improvements if you have any. If you don’t tell us, we can’t do anything. It is also useful if you can let us know what is good about the module too, if you want to 

Module Learning Outcomes

By engaging successfully with this module you will be able to:

1. Explore the complex nature of leadership, management and organisational change, using theories and current research, appropriate to your own situation or area of interest.

2. Examine the inter-relationship between the forces impacting on an organisation and its organisational cultures, and examine the implications of this on how leaders need to take up their roles and lead change.

3. Reflect on how you took up your role (as leader, follower or other) through a change process, examining the nature of your and others relationships through the change.

4. Critically reflect on your own learning, evaluating how theories and concepts of strategic management are linked to other modules on the course, the organisational context and your own personal and professional development; citing actions to take and potential barriers to implementation.

Module Assessment Details

The assessment will require the application of leadership and organisational change theory and concepts to real organisational contexts and include reflection on how it does/should occur in practice.
